Re-Living Christmas: Cherished moments and memories #8

I know, and i agree

That we shouldn’t make
Waiting a habit.
But sometimes
There is nothing else to do
But wait!
And waiting is one thing
I remember
About Christmas –
Waiting for my siblings to come home,
Waiting for the gifts,
Waiting for Christmas Day itself,
Waiting for the feast,
Waiting, waiting and more waiting.
This, especially the waiting for my siblings,
Taught me Patience, Hope and Faith.
There was no way to hurry or force it —
I simply had to learn to wait and hope.
You see, prior to the brood leaving the nest,
We would all gather at home in December
For a Christmas feast.
It almost never happens now,
But back then,
It was about the only time
Of the year
When the whole family would be home
Eating and rejoicing together.
And I looked forward to it
With the eagerness that only a child knows –
Not only to the togetherness,
But also
To the happy laughter and chatter
That would momentarily
Engulf our otherwise quiet home.
We didn’t have mobile phones back then,
And our family has never been known for letters;
So, there was no way of knowing
When my elder siblings
Would come home.
It was always a surprise
To hear them knock at the door,
Or see them walking up the gate;
And then pandemonium would break loose
As we all rejoiced and welcomed them home.
Some came a week or so early,
Others arrived on the eve of,
Or on the Christmas Day itself.
Sometimes, because of a public transport system run amok
Some would, sadly, arrive after the feast
Or not at all.
So, over the years, growing up
I learnt that the only thing I had
During this time
Was to hope
That we’d be full house
Come Christmas Day;
And for most years
My dogged patience and faith
Was rewarded
In more glorious ways than one!
Here then are two truths i know —
For the things we can control, we should never make waiting a habit,
But for the things we can’t control, only the patient get rewarded!
