Re-Living Christmas: Cherished moments and memories #9

I’ll wager a guess –

You swear you were born with a sweet tooth.
You are not alone.
You are in pretty good company.
I doubt there is any adult out there
Who didn’t have a sweet tooth as a child.
It’s like a rite of passage
When every child craves for anything coloured
In a shiny wrapping
And has a crinkling sound.
I suspect we share another kindred memory too —
Of Christmas
As a season
When we were allowed to swim freely,
And spoil ourselves rotten
With the most amazing assortment
Of sweets and biscuits,
Chocolate and cookies,
Cakes and cup-cakes.
I didn’t know most of these then —
Just little coloured jelly sweets and gum,
And the Marie Family Pack biscuits.
These were a Christmas stable for me
And i had a wild time with them!
You may find them now displayed at the local supermarket,
But back then
It was a rarity seen in the village
Only in Christmas…
That and the Family Bread –
So called because it was the longest bread available,
Convenient for a large family.
But it’s the sweets and biscuits that I remember most –
Without those, there was no Christmas.
I don’t know how and why the sweet tooth disappears with age,
But I know this:
Sweet tooth or not,
Then and now…
No Christmas is complete
Without sweets and biscuits.
