Words that caught me: F is for 'Find a reason to smile'

Granted…we are living through strange times,
Of near empty streets,
Wearing face masks,
And no hugs, kisses or handshakes!

A lot of us are worried and anxious.
It’s not just our health that’s at risk…but also our daily bread,
Education for our children,
And freedom to pursue our dreams.

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to find something to celebrate about.
The more we engage with the world, the more things seem uncertain.
The more we keep to ourselves, the more we feel aloof and exposed.

What else can we do?
How can we keep our sanity and sense of balance?

We can choose to push back and get proactive.

It’s true…we cannot completely avoid engaging with the world
And its seemingly bottomless sea of negativity,
Nor can we wholly eliminate the fear
And turmoil going on inside our hearts.

But we can find ways to keep up our morale and joie de vivre.

It isn’t all gloomy and doom.
There is still some bit of good happening around us
And it’s important that we deliberately try to find, tune and turn towards this
As a means of enlivening us.

‘A taste of aliveness in a moment (of darkness such as this)
Can fill, sustain and refresh us
As we make it through the daily grind of doubt and confusion.’ (Mark Nepo)

When we open our eyes and ears to see and hear the good around us,
We’ll start to notice even the smallest random acts of kindness and compassion.
That alone is a good reason to smile and lift up our hearts.

So, this is call to all of us who care about our mental and spiritual health.
Try and get proactive in looking for the good, sweet and funny stuff around you,
That you can celebrate and enjoy.
Let’s try to find reasons to smile and laugh.
Let’s try to cherish the blessings and miracles that still abound.
Let’s choose to lift and turn our heads towards joy
And believe that if we do so, life will touch and heal us!
