Re-Living Christmas: Cherished moments and memories #12

To this day,

It’s a common occurrence in December,
To meet with a relative or an old friend,
And after greetings say, ‘Give me Christmas…’
Or smile and say, ‘I’ll be expecting Christmas from you…’
To this day,
It’s a cinch in December to hear a knock at the door,
And have a relative say, ‘I’ve brought you Christmas…’
Or ‘I’ve come for Christmas…’
I grew up hearing these phrases,
And knowing
That
Christmas is a season
For gifting
And
Sharing.
It’s about the only time I know of the year
When people would ask for gifts,
Without feeling like beggars
And,
When everybody would be overwhelmingly generous —
In kind, deed and spirit —
Irrespective of their status in society.
Me thinks,
That, stripped to the bone,
It’s the amount of COMPASSION, KINDNESS,
LOVE and GRACE,
That humanity pours
Into Christmas,
That makes Christmas,
Christmas.
What I don’t seem to understand
Is why we wait for Christmas,
Or need the excuse of Christmas,
To show this side of our humanity,
And be truly human
To each other.
Why?
Why can’t we LIVE like this
Every day?
